What is Building Trades, "The Student-built House"?
Building Trades is a class for any high school senior. It is a year-long course that meets for two periods, either in the morning or the afternoon, each day. The class meets away from the school campus at a construction site. During the school year students in the class build a house!
There are no pre-requisites for the class, any interested student is welcome to sign-up. However there is an application process and you must be accepted into the class. What do you do in the class?
The Building Trades class isn't for students who just want to sit in class and listen to the teacher talk. This class is for students who want to do things. During the course of one school year the class will build a single-family house!
You will do the framing, roofing, install doors & windows, experience drywall, install finish trim, plus much more and have a great time doing it. All of this plus 10 credit hours and a P.E. wavier each term.
Why might the class be good for you?
The Building Trades class is for anyone who wants to be a part of a team effort in practical problem solving. Specifically, students whose career goals include construction, construction management, architectural design, engineering, or any other building trades career.
The class is also good for anyone who has ever wondered how a house is built. Or, for someone who likes the idea of learning problem solving, teamwork, and the use of tools while working on a real life project.
